Winter Enchantment - A 2024 Feature Auction
Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ first feature auction of the year, “winter Enchantment,” will present an array of important art, antiques, and decorative rarities sourced primarily from local collections and estates.
Happening Friday, February 23rd, the sale will include selections of small boxes, inkwells & desk collectibles, baseball memorabilia, fashion items, jewelry & silver, Carroll Thayer Berry prints, barrister bookcases and accent furniture, dolls, porcelain dinnerware & art glass, Japanese artifacts, and firearms.
The on Saturday, February 24th, we will present artwork by Alfred Thompson Bricher, David Teniers, the Younger, Thomas Birch, Alexandre Calame, Pierre Renoir, James John Hill, William Stubbs, Stan Stokes, Hiram Powers, Georges Valentin Bareau, George Loring Brown, Wesley Webber, Jean-Baptiste Greuze, Jerome Howes, Louis Moret, and others on Day 2, happening February 24th.
An excellent inventory of early maps will be presented, led by 18th Century charts of Canada by Des Barres and Pierre Mortier. A Renaissance Period carved wooden plaque depicting the Black Madonna will be sold, along with an important patriotic design ship’s stern board by Rockland, ME carver Lucien Green. Americana to be offered on this day will include marine items, weathervanes, decoys, samplers, and stoneware. Also including American and European antique furniture, Chinese porcelain, early lighting, and an excellent group of tea caddies. Among our Asian antiques: a 17th-18th Century Thai bronze Buddha and a pair of French ormolu mounted Chinese flambe glazed bottle vases, as well as a great selection of oriental carpets, early silver, and antiquities.
Finally, Sunday, February 25th, will feature artwork by Beauford Delaney, Joan Miro, Raoul Dufy, Andrew George Winter, Kathe Kollwitz, Shoetsu Takahashi, R. Emmett Owen, Jean Claude Riopelle, William Dethlef Koerner, Aldro Hibbard, and others. Also offering mportant works by Maine artists: William Manning, Carroll Thayer Berry, Grant Drumheller, Eric Hopkins, John Paul Caponigro, William Thon, Vernon Broe, and Waldo Peirce.
On this day, we will sell a large group of estate jewelry & watches, including a circa 1920 18K gold ring set with a 6.54-carat diamond, a Cartier of Paris woven 18K gold mesh purse, and a 14K gold pocket watch by the Hampden Watch Co. with lighthouse and ship decorated case. On this day we will offer 2 German enameled singing bird boxes by Karl Griesbaum, plus a nice selection of bronze animal sculptures and 3 Omersa leather animal footstools. The furniture category will include an Eames leather armchair with ottoman, plus pieces by Eldred Wheeler and Thos. Moser. Additionally, this day will offer a Dominick & Haff sterling coffee and tea service and a cased set of Kirk-Stieff “Repousse” pattern flatwareainted bamboo and lily designs.
